Additional OHV Trails Near Sedona

Broken Arrow OHV Trail (FR-179F) is one of the most popular 4×4 trails in Arizona for good measure. Known for its stunning red rock scenery and unique rock formations such as Submarine Rock, Chicken Point, and Devil’s Dining Room Sinkhole, Broken Arrow is a quick off-road adventure you won’t forget. Located in the heart of Sedona near the Tlaquepaque district, this is a great spot for driving, hiking, and biking. Due to its popularity, traffic can get very heavy at times so plan accordingly.

Broken Arrow is one of the more challenging OHV trails in Sedona at a nearly 3.7-mile route trip. Though it is shorter in distance compared to other OHV trails in the region, it takes longer than expected due to technicality. Several large rock ledges require high-ground clearance. The hardest obstacle is called “The Steps” is driven one way downhill. With only one access point for off-road vehicles, this OHV trail is well-marked and easy to follow but can become very congested (especially during peak tourism seasons). Broken Arrow OHV Trail is accessible through a full-day rental with Vortex ATV Rental.

Sedona’s Vultee Arch Trail (FR-152) is considered an intermediate off-road trail that takes you on a scenic journey through the forest and along a breathtaking canyon. At nearly 8 miles round trip, the terrain is not the longest or most difficult but plan on climbing a lot of elevation in a short distance. This is considered a heavily trafficked trail because hikers, bikers,  jeep touring companies, and rental companies use the same trail system.

This is a very popular trail due to the renowned Devils Bridge hike, one of Arizona’s most popular hiking trails year-round. Vultee’s Arch does not get you exactly to the bridge as some wish; you still have to hike nearly 1 mile in each direction through steep, but well-marked terrain. A less congested arch to visit next to Devils Bridge is Vultee Arch, a short 3-mile hike at the turnaround point on the 4×4 trail. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended to safely maneuver this off-road trail. You can access this scenic trail through Vortex ATV Rental with a 4-5 hour ATV rental, but a full-day rental is recommended due to unexpected traffic throughout. Learn more here:

Soldiers Pass OHV Trail (FR-9904) is a short but memorable off-roading option in the heart of West Sedona. This off-road trail is 2.5 miles round trip but has a lot to offer. Soldier Pass is considered an intermediate to challenging 4×4 trail with very tight places, and several steep climbs. Less than a mile into the adventure there is a required rock that you must climb over, which sets what is to be expected throughout the longevity of this OHV trail. Throughout there are a couple of optional adventurous obstacles that you can choose to skip if you’re not comfortable with them.

Located in the heart of West Sedona, Soldiers Pass is considered to be a very busy trail system due to hikers, bikers, tours, and rentals alike sharing the majority of the route. In an attempt to limit congestion, a permit system has been implemented by Coconino Forest Service to 12 private vehicles per day. Permits can be obtained 72 hours to 90 days in advance, but are given out on a first come, first served basis. Permits are required for off-roading Soldiers Pass, so please plan accordingly if you wish to do such. More info and apply for the required permit here. High-clearance 4×4 vehicles are recommended and this route can be completed on a full day ATV rental with Vortex ATV Rental.

Sedona’s Schnebly Hill OHV Trail (FR-153) is a moderately challenging 4×4 trail that climbs 2,200 feet from the heart of Sedona to the top of the Mogollon Rim. This designated off-road trail is known to be crowded and one of Arizona’s most picturesque 4×4 routes. What makes Schnebly Hill unique is the transition from the red rock and desert terrain of Sedona to green and lush pine trees entering Flagstaff and the Mogollon Rim.

This scenic and adventurous off-road trail is just under 11 miles one way to complete and is known to be very crowded most of the year. Due to elevation gain, there are seasonal closures so be precarious before attempting to complete. This off-road trail isn’t suitable for passenger cars, high-clearance vehicles are required to make it through safely properly. Schnebly Hill OHV Trail is accessible with a full-day ATV rental through Vortex ATV Rental. Learn more here

Cliffhanger OHV Trail (FR-9845A) is a less congested designated route located on the outskirts of West Sedona. Right around the corner from Red Rock State Park, we would consider this a beginner to intermediate 4×4 trail that is a perfect option if you’re looking to experience the beautiful Verde Valley desert landscape. The route is just over 5.5 miles point-to-point and does not get a lot of the congestion that other OHV trails in the Red Rock District of Coconino National Forest can get.

Overall this off-road trail is pretty adventurous, with a few loose, rocky, steep, and narrow sections. This is a great chance to take in all the scenery of the Verde Valley and get away from the crowds. Once at the turnaround point, there is an option for a short half-mile hike to reach the creek and the stone cabin ruins at the homestead. High-clearance vehicles are highly recommended and this route can be completed on a 4-hour ATV rental with Vortex ATV Rental. Find more information about this red rock OHV trail in Sedona Arizona here.

House Mountain OHV Trail (FR- 9952) is an intermediate-advanced OHV option in the middle of the Verde Valley. Located in the middle of the Verde Valley, this 10.5-mile out-and-back 4×4 trail is considered a bumpy and consistent hill climb to the vista point. Narrow at points, take in the vast Arizona landscape throughout the entire route. Once on top of the vista, enjoy the breathtaking 360 views of Sedona, Cottonwood, and Cornville alike.

Considered a local gem, House Mountain OHV Trail does not get a lot of attention, or crowds, as other 4×4 trails in the Sedona region. This means you can expect to see hardly anyone throughout your entire time on the mountain. Furthermore, this 4×4 route does not get maintained as often and the exposure and vegetation can overgrow at a variety of points. This mountain is manageable within a 4-5 hour ATV rental with Vortex ATV Rental, but a full-day rental is recommended to enjoy and explore the vast Arizona landscape. Learn more about this secluded 4×4 option here.

Casner Mountain OHV Trail (FR-9529) is a hillclimb on the outskirts of West Sedona and the Verde Valley. Known to be remote and secluded, this is an intermediate-advanced route that locals love. Expect inconsistently rough terrain throughout, and the road does get narrow with tight turns at points, so please be advised it is not friendly to those afraid of heights. Originally built to maintain power lines the route starts by climbing the switchbacks underneath the powerlines over 2000 feet.

Once on top, continue over Casner Mountain itself and along some ridgebacks that split Sycamore Canyon (west) from the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness (east) into two very distant geographies with vast landscapes. This 4×4 trail will head towards Flagstaff and near the Edge of the World, a renowned camping area overlooking Sedona. High-clearance vehicles are required to safely maneuver obstacles. Furthermore, permits are required for vehicles over 62 inches in length. Vehicles under 62 inches can access this all year around, with seasonal closures in the Flagstaff region. Find more information about Casner Mountain OHV Trail HERE. This is recommended within a full-day ATV rental with Vortex ATV Rental
