- In 1875, the first mining claims and a mill site were located near the present site of Jerome, Arizona.
- The town was named after Eugene Jerome, the major financier of the United Verde Copper Company which first established Jerome.
- This historic mining town is underlain by 88 miles of mine shafts, and the main ore source was copper until the town shut down mining operations in 1953.
- In 1967, Jerome became a National Historic Landmark. By the early 21st century, Jerome had art galleries, coffee houses, restaurants, a state park, and a local museum devoted to mining history. After population fell to less than 100 people, Jerome Historical Society was established in 1953 and opened a museum and gift shop to help drive the economy.
- Most of Cleopatra Hill, the rock upon which Jerome was built, is 1.75 billion years old.
